Civic Engagement Center (CEC)

Civic Engagement Center LOGO

From its inception, National Louis University (NLU) has been a progressive institution. Its founder, Elizabeth Harrison, believed that the success of a community began with educating the youngest of its children. What started as a school to train young women in the 1880’s to become kindergarten teachers has blossomed into a multi-campus University committed to creating an affordable and innovative setting of higher learning for first-generation and urban students who want to make a positive impact on their communities.  NLU’s Civic Engagement Center (CEC), established in 2004, serves as the university’s resource center providing opportunities for students to learn and serve and is a key part of NLU’s broader mission.

The Civic Engagement Center is your campus resource for life-changing opportunities to learn and serve. National Louis University has always been an active and integral member of the community. We train the teachers, principals, social workers, business leaders and community developers who contribute to the health and prosperity of our cities, towns and neighborhoods. We also believe that service is one of the greatest teachers. It opens the heart while challenging the mind to solve real problems for real people. Both students and communities win when service is integrated into the curriculum.

The mission of the Civic Engagement Center (CEC) is aligned with National Louis University's mission - to advance the education of students to become civic-minded, actively engaged, life-long scholars and leaders on campus, locally, throughout the nation and globally.
