School Psychology Graduate Program at NLU

We offer Specialist-Level (Ed.S.) training in our School Psychology graduate program, where students can learn and apply evidence-based practices to promote students' academic, behavioral, mental health, and social-emotional development in a multi-tier service delivery model, formerly known as Response to Intervention (RTI). A respecialization option may be available for persons with related previous graduate degrees (e.g., Clinical Psychology).

Our Ed.S. Program in School Psychology Program is approved by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), and graduates are eligible for licensure as school psychologists by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and to become Nationally Certified School Psychologists (NCSP) by NASP.

The Focus of Our School Psychology Programs

Are you looking to make a difference with students, families, and school staff? If so, then the NLU School Psychology program may be the one for you. If these ideas resonate with you, click here to view our Program's Big Ideas.

For almost a half century, school psychologists have been struggling to be seen as more than the persons who "just test students" or who serve as "gatekeepers" for special education. Instead, the field has moved increasingly away from "test and place" models to roles where school psychologists take responsibility for providing academic, behavioral, mental health, and social-emotional prevention, intervention, and consultation services and supports in schools.

Our students learn evidence-based, functional assessment and intervention practices with an ecological and preventive/early intervention focus. The goal is to prepare our graduates to assume leadership roles in their district, not only as service providers, but as real school leaders to advocate for students and social justice.

NLU School Psychology Program Handbook

This handbook provides key information about the School Psychology Program, degree requirements, and program resources. This handbook is updated annually. Students within the program are held to the requirements set forth in the handbook under which they started the program, as well as the policies and requirements specified in the National Louis University Student Guidebook.
