Ed.D. in Counselor Education & Supervision

The field of counselor education and supervision is dedicated to both the academic preparation and comprehensive supervision of counselors across multiple settings. The doctor of education (Ed.D.) in counselor education & supervision degree program aligns with the master’s-level counselor education programs in order to encourage entry-level counseling students to work toward becoming doctoral-level practitioners, educators, and supervisors.

The Ed.D. in counselor education & supervision degree program is designed to prepare counselors for a variety of settings by providing the advanced skills and knowledge necessary to provide leadership and advocacy, as well as serve in supervisory, training, and teaching positions in the counseling profession.

The Ed.D. in counselor education & supervision degree program is also designed to help current practitioners with existing master’s-level preparation to advance their careers. This doctorate degree can provide expanded opportunities to compete in the marketplace, on par with the growing number of doctoral-level counseling practitioners.

NLU's doctorate in counselor education and supervision (CES) program is designed to prepare graduates for careers in counselor education, professional leadership and supervision, advanced clinical practice, advocacy, research, and scholarship.

National Louis University is seeking accreditation for its Counseling-Online programs, by The Council on the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP), the organization that accredits professional counseling programs.

  • The MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and the EdD program in Counselor Education and Supervision at NLU are delivered in a Live-On-Line format using a technology-based interactive, distance learning format that combines Real-Time instruction with online coursework. In addition to the online instruction, each course will meet for a real-time video conference classroom experience for 1.5 hours per week for 10 weeks. These courses are delivered in the evenings, usually from 6pm – 7:30pm EST or 7:30 – 9pm EST. The student will benefit by weekly live interaction with their instructor and peers. This delivery format allows for the intimacy of an on-ground classroom but has the flexibility of an online program. This instructional methodology integrates the synchronous and asynchronous instruction supported as the most efficacious by research.

Having acquired skills and knowledge in ethics, social and cultural issues, multicultural competence, interpersonal effectiveness, and written/oral presentation, graduates of this program are well positioned for careers in:

  • Research (understanding and applying qualitative and quantitative research)

  • A master’s degree in a CACREP accredited program or a master’s program where they fulfilled CACREP entry-level counseling degree requirements from a regionally accredited educational institution, a nationally accredited institution approved and documented by the faculty and dean of the College of Counseling, Psychology and Social Sciences, or an appropriately certified foreign institution.
  • Official transcripts from the institution that conferred the master’s degree and any institutions where graduate coursework was subsequently taken. Bachelor’s level transcripts are not required.
  • A grade point average of 3.25 (on a scale of 4.0) for graduate level work toward the master’s degree and any subsequent graduate study for unconditional admission. Admission with 2-course review may be approved for a grade point average below 3.25 for all graduate work.
  • Proof of English language proficiency is required if English is not the applicant’s native language and/or the applicant’s high school degree was earned outside the U.S. This requirement may be waived if the applicant has proof of completion of a high school degree for undergraduate admission, or a bachelor’s degree for graduate admission, at an institution where English is the primary language of instruction.   • Current résumé (or curriculum vita)
  • Personal/professional goal statement with specific personal and professional goals and a self-appraisal of specific strengths and challenges.
  • A minimum of three professional letters of recommendation, addressing topics/questions as established and periodically revised by the faculty. Letters of recommendation must be written by individuals who know the candidate from an academic or professional perspective and are able to comment on the candidate’s capacity for undertaking graduate studies.
  • Interview with a member of the program admissions committee.

In order to graduate, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Satisfactory completion of 60 credit hours beyond the master’s degree
  • Successful completion of the advanced training experiences
  • A grade point average of 3.0 or higher (on a scale of 4.0)
  • Satisfactory performance on the comprehensive examination
  • Successful completion and defense of the dissertation
