Educational Leadership Graduate Degrees

M.Ed. or Ed.S. in Educational Leadership

The educational leadership program at National Louis University is designed for experienced educators who want to take on leadership roles in PK–12 schools and education-driven organizations. With the option to pursue either the principal licensure or general educational leadership tracks, our program provides a solid foundation for effective practice and career advancement for practitioners in a variety of roles and educational settings, including PK-12 schools, nonprofit organizations, museums, and corporate learning.

A non-licensure general educational leadership track that prepares candidates to lead in other educational settings is also available.

NLU’s educational leadership program is offered in a convenient format designed to fit your professional and personal commitments.  Classes are offered via a blended format that combines on-campus courses with online instruction.

Master of Education (M.Ed.):The master's in educational leadership degree is designed to prepare school-level leaders.

Educational Specialist (Ed.S.): The Ed.S. in educational leadership is a post-master, pre-doctoral degree designed to meet the needs of aspiring school leaders who have completed their master’s level work.

Employment for school administrators is projected to grow about 8 percent between 2008 and 2018. Job opportunities should be excellent due to a large number of expected retirements and fewer applicants.

NLU has a long-standing reputation for its education and administrator training programs. Since 1886, NLU has trained thousands of educators and continues to graduate the majority of winners honored by Illinois’ two Golden Apple Foundations with one of the most prestigious teaching and leadership honors in the state. Our instructors bring both academic skills and their extensive leadership experience to the classroom, which brings unique depth to NLU’s graduate education degree programs.

NLU’s Administration and Supervision program is offered in two convenient formats designed to fit your professional and personal commitments. A traditional on-campus format in Illinois and a blended format that combines on-campus courses with online instruction in both Illinois and Florida.

A required internship component is part of the NLU endorsement/ licensure program. Students will complete a variety of significant school leadership experiences and will have an internship advisor from NLU to support them throughout their program.

The internship is based on the state of Illinois requirements. Candidates will complete a set of competencies designed to prepare them to be effective principals.

The internship seminars include video evaluation of teacher performance, mock interviews, resume building, etc. Illinois graduating students will be eligible for the Illinois CPS principal test.

The non-endorsement track replaces the 6 semester hours of internship (EDL598) with electives in the field of leadership or education. 

NLU's educational leadership curriculum meets Florida and Illinois state approval requirements. Upon successful completion of the program's endorsement track, candidates will be eligible to apply for a general administrative endorsement.
