The Master of Science in Human Resource Management and Development (HRMD) program gives human resources practitioners the leadership skills to help build organizations that maximize the effectiveness of human capital. NLU’s Master of Science in Human Resource Management and Development program offers a practical, applications-oriented curriculum that builds leadership skills and knowledge that managers can implement in real time in their working environments. The program aligns with the professional standards of the Society for Human Resource Management’s (SHRM) Body of Competency and Knowledge. This includes the knowledge domains of people, organization, workplace and strategy.

Human resource management courses will prepare you to sit for HR Certification Institute and SHRM’s professional certification exams in:

  • Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR) from HRCI: No additional experience is required
  • Professional in Human Resources (PHR) from HRCI: Upon acquiring one year of experience in a professional-level HR position
  • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP): Upon becoming employed in an HR role 

This program for an MBA in human resources in Chicago is tailored to meet the needs of busy adults juggling personal and professional commitments. Fellowship with classmate-colleagues is also promoted. HRMD students progress through the program with one group of classmates, though the schedule permits some flexibility to allow students to start at any time and take the classes they desire. The program requires 12 courses and can be completed in 20 months. The College of Professional Studies and Advancement will review graduate hours completed at accredited institutions and may transfer up to a maximum of 9 hours of credit toward the Master of Science in Human Resource Management and Development.

Some or all of those hours may also be awarded through a Certification-to-Credit Pathway, in which NLU will award prior learning credit for certain human resources certifications, including: Associate Professional in Human Resources (aPHR), Professional in Human Resources (PHR), Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), SHRM Certified Professional (SHRMCP), SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP), Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), Certified Benefits Professional (CBP), Global Remuneration Professional (GRP), and Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS).
